una cerveza por favor

No recipes this week from me last week I’m afraid as I was in Mexico City for work. It’s such a fantastic, vibrant city and the food is amazing. Not as spicy as you would expect (though I am a chilli fiend) and you have all these various salsas, herbs and limes to vary the taste of what you’ve ordered. Also its brilliant as its nearly all corn tortillas so works out well for my IBS.

So far this week I’ve tried blue corn tortillas – yes really, photographic evidence below!

Cactus – which is chewy, savoury and a bit tasteless to be honest, green enchiladas, shrimp tacos, plantain empanadas with chipotle salsa – both strange on their own but a perfect taste combo together, spicy flattened pork served with corn tortillas and guacamole – nom, nom – completely different from a lot of the Mexican food back at home, not as greasy and much less cheese!

One of the best meals I think was after a visit to Teotihuacan the pyramid site just outside mexico city  to Mayahuel restaurant http://teotihuacanmayahuel.sinestesiamedia.net/ the cactus you eat is grown on the property  and everything is locally sourced. There were some pretty exciting things on the menu including – we decided against sampling grasshopper or exotic sausage! And decided to go for one of their molcajete bowls which came with a variety of meat, cactus and guacamole, blue corn tortillas and salsas (pic below and main). Accompanied by some great music.

In addition to the fantastic food I’ve also sampled a fair amount of tequila, it would be rude not to – to be honest! The tequila here tastes more like sherry and sipped slowly, served with either lime juice or sangrita which is a spicy, savoury tomato juice which you sip with the tequila. I asked the local restaurant what was in it if you fancy giving it a try with your next tequila.

  • Tomato juice
  • Worchester sauce a few drops (yes really!) which we saw called English brown salsa out here!
  • Oregano
  • Pinch of sugar and salt
  • Tobasco sauce

So pretty much like a bloody mary mix!

Its always a challenge travelling with IBS – but I’m pretty much keeping it in check with aloe vera juice, probiotic supplements and peppermint capsules and trying to steer clear of the usual offenders.

I’m back in sunny old London town now (crossing fingers the weather lasts!) and I promise some recipes to follow this week!
